If you are convicted of DUI in Georgia, you are going to learn about Georgia’s DUI, Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction course, which is an intervention program that is mandated by law for people who have been convicted of DUI, underage possession of alcohol while operating a motor vehicle, Boating Under the Influence (BUI), or drug possession.
The course is made up of two components: assessment and intervention, both of which you must successfully complete in order to receive a certificate of completion.
The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) has approved the NEEDS Assessment Component. This is a 130-question screening tool that is used to evaluate the extent of an offender’s alcohol and drug use, and its direct impact on their driving.
The DDS approved the Prime for Life Intervention Component, which is a product of Prevention Research Institute, Inc. After you complete the Assessment Component, you are required to complete the Intervention Component, which consists of a 20-hour course that is completed over several sessions, and delivered in a group setting. The course can usually be completed within one week.
The Intervention Component offers:
A group atmosphere
Therapeutic education
Peer group counseling on alcohol and drug use
Counseling on the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving
As of July 1, 2014, the cost of a DUI, Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction course is $335.00. This fee covers the costs of the Assessment Component, the Intervention Component, and the workbook.
All DDS certified schools enforce strict attendance policies. You will be expected to arrive on time and complete each session in full. If you arrive late to any session, you can expect to be denied entry into the class and the school may require that you not only start the course all over again, but pay the full cost.
If you are required to take this course, it is highly recommended that you consider the course schedule carefully and avoid taken into account any possible scheduling conflicts before signing up for a particular session.
